Our principles

  • Adults working with young children need to be well qualified and have high expectations of all children

 Teaching is thoughtfully and carefully planned, based on our knowledge and understanding of the children’s interests, needs and stage of development. At Comet, we believe:

  • The process of learning is valued rather than the end product
  • Children require space and time to repeat, practice and consolidate their learning
  • Children should be provided with opportunities to be curious, to use their imagination and to develop their creativity
  • Children should be taught how to access and use materials and resources in the provision
  • Young children learn actively and use their senses to develop an understanding of the world around them
  • Adult led focus activities must be planned with clear learning intentions
  • Previous knowledge and experience should be built upon and be evident in planning
  • Providing open ended questions and comments promotes shared, sustained thinking
  • Opportunities for the development of speaking and listening skills should be embedded in our practice in order to develop communication
  • Adults should model and support children to work collaboratively, sharing their ideas and negotiating with others
  • In order to build self-confidence and self-esteem, we consistently praise and encourage children

 Each nursery sessions ends with a structured group time which focuses on one or more of the following:

  • Reading stories from our book collection
  • Singing and rhymes
  • Opportunities to talk, listen, and take turns
  • Activities that develop children’s awareness of phonics

 We aim to develop children's confidence and independence as a learner, communicator, collaborator and creative thinker.
