Comet Children’s Centres
At Comet Children’s Centres we believe every child and their family deserve a good start in life regardless of background, learning difficulty, disability or gender. We run exciting and stimulating services for 48 weeks of the year, offering a wide range of activities that support children from birth to five years old, parents/carers and grandparents. We pride ourselves on delivering excellence for all children within the Foundation Years. Our early years practitioners aim to help children experience the best possible start in life enabling them develop their personalities and talents. We make it our priority to get to know each child and their parent, ensuring we plan and deliver activities that are not just developmentally appropriate but are challenging, inspirational and fun to do together.
Stay & Play Sessions:
These sessions are fantastic for learning how to engage with your child and play with them. Playing with young children doesn’t come easily for all of us; staff are trained to support everyone to ensure that you gain confidence in play based activities that you can try out at home. We encourage and support all families to create a My Journey portrait book to capture the developmental journey and milestones of your child, both here at the children’s centre and at home. My Journey portraits will become priceless to you over the years and something for you and the family to treasure.
We run family music sessions with Corin on Monday mornings at Comet and on Thursday afternoons at Comet@Thomas Fairchild. Music sessions are a great way to learn, gain independence whilst generating a wonderful energy.
Family Learning & Adult Learning:
We run accredited and non-accredited courses and classes that support people in learning new skills that help them access employment opportunities, support older children with their homework or just to learn a new hobby. Classes vary throughout the year so look out for specific details within the centre or contact a member of staff. Some of the classes we have delivered this year include, Healthy Cooking for Life, Cake Decorating, Sewing, Gardening, ESOL, Literacy and Maths. We are always looking for new ideas to make our offer even better.
If you need support with some parenting strategies, help creating or establishing a positive routine in the home or setting some firm boundaries then make an appointment with the Family Practitioner at Sebright Children's Centre where you can discuss the challenges you are facing whilst getting the support you need to overcome them.
Family and Parenting Support:
Courses, workshops and programs provide a chance to discuss a wide range of issues from fussy eating, difficult behaviours or how to improve the relationship you have with your child. We also offer individual support and outreach services. Please ask for more information on our parenting program Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities, Healthy Eating for the Really Young (HENRY) and Speak Easy.
Health services for children and families:
We offer: health and development checks with a midwife or health visitor; immunisations; development and feeding advice and support, and referrals to health services like speech and family therapy, psychology and the nutrition team. We also run a specific service Hackney Orbit with the aim to provide holistic support to woman suffering with substance and alcohol addiction. In addition to the support provided for women, the sessions are accessible to their partners and family members; parents, carers of children aged 5 or under where a person in the family is experiencing the affects of substance / alcohol use whether engaged in treatment or not.
Work and Training Support:
The Children’s Centre is overseen by the Governing Body, including parent governors, working with the parent-led Children’s Centre committee. We welcome parent feedback and suggestions: we want parents to shape our services, not just use them.
